![]() And that should have been more than enough to keep the story going. Of course, there is also madness, with the character from the childhood story reimagined as adults with dark histories and violent behaviors. I did think Alice was an adult’s retelling of the childhood story, ripe with rape, human trafficking, violence, and thugs. I was impatient to finish the book, not because it was good and I wanted to find out what happens, but because I wanted it to end. Just a tea party long ago, and long ears, and blood…Then, one night, a fire at the hospital gives the woman a chance to escape, leaving her free to uncover the truth about what happened to her all those years ago. ![]() She doesn’t remember why she’s in such a terrible place. ![]() Her hair, once blond, hangs in tangles down her back. ![]() In a warren of crumbling buildings called the Old City, a hospital echoes with the screams of the poor souls inside. ![]() A grotesque reimagining of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, Alice takes you down the rabbit hole into something more violent and bloody than Carroll ever imagined.īut though that would normally be right up my alley (or down my rabbit hole), I found it creepy but uninspired. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Ellis takes a more unsettling route, by not backing down from showing us the sort of scumbags that make porn, but introducing us to a woman whose sexual appetites have led her make the informed decision that porn is the best outlet for her unusual desires.ĭo I pity her? No, because she, like many porn actresses, made her decision and is more or less happy about it, but it feels a bit hollow. Either it's the fulfillment of the typical male fantasies, in which a bunch of over-sexed starlets have good, clean orgasmic fun for our entertainment, or it's a feminist nightmare where porn is just a couple of short steps away from rape. In fiction, there's usually only two ways porn is portrayed. Take the third chapter of "Made In England", which is mostly a conversation during a dinner between our hero and a porn actress. Sure, the good guys "win" in the end, but you're never quite sure if the cathartic bits of violence are worth the emotion pain of the journey. Whenever I read a really good Warren Ellis book, I'm always left with a sense of profound sadness. I am lesbian, so I am sort of somewhat maybe able to relate to the ones outside the power structure, not in an “oppression olympics” kind of way, but in a way that says the lines are blurred and no one is only one thing. White is an overwhelming identity, suggestive of very much privilege and power, a system that work for me, for us, a general ability to go along and get along. I know this, and I adapt or listen as best I can. But, for all the work I’ve done to learn, teach and embrace racial justice, I remain hampered and aware of my hampered-ness, in at least two ways:įirst, “we” is more than one thing. We are intentional about our expansive welcome, and I think we get it right a lot of the time. What aspect of Christopher Lane’s performance would you have changed? This is a nonfiction work that analyzes news and events from the 1930s which shaped American culture during that time frame. If you are interested in an overview of that era, this book provides a lot of useful information of what it would have been like to live and work (or be unemployed) in the country during that difficult time period. It does a relatively good job of capturing the culture and conditions of the American experience of the 1930s. Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not? ![]() |
